The Rev. J. S. P. Black was brought up in Balteagh congregation, in the countryside of the Roe Valley of County Londonderry, and near the town of Limavady. He was educated at Foyle College and Magee University College, Londonderry, at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Assembly’s College, Belfast.

He was licensed in 1935 and took up an assistantship in Great James Street congregation, Londonderry, before becoming minister of Largy Presbyterian Church, near Limavady, in 1937. In 1952 he moved to Belfast, and built up the church extension charge of Garnerville, where he remained until his retirement in 1970.

He completed this history of the Balteagh congregation very shortly before his death in 1984.
